Before buying any new pair of running shoes, it is recommended you have a gait analysis to determine what type of shoes are the best for you and your style. A gait analysis will look at how your feet perform during an exercise and assesses if you pronate and how your foot strikes the ground.
If you are a first-time runner and need to buy your first pair of running shoes, the most expensive pair doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the right pair for you. Don’t be tempted with all the sales and marketing or what the sales assistant is trying to sell you.
If you are a casual or experienced runner who has bought more than one pair of running shoes, you may already know what your gait is. However, your gait can change over time particularly if you get injured, so it’s always best to check for reassurance.
There are three types of foot strike – heel, mid and fore foot. There are also three types of pronation. If your foot rolls inwards then you are classed as a pronator. This usually means you have low arches or flat feet. Approximately 70% of the population pronate and is considered as one of the most common pronation amongst runners.
If you have a high arch then your foot may roll outwards (otherwise known as a supinator). Alternatively, if you distribute your weight evenly from foot strike to toe off, you will have a neutral style and will therefore require a neutral shoe. Runners who wear neutral shoes are less likely to develop running injuries than those who pronate or supinate.
This information helps us to determine the correct type of running shoe for you. For example, if you are a heel striker and pronate then we would recommend you buy a shoe which has some support built into the shoe. If you are a mid-foot striker or fore foot striker with a neutral pronation then you would require a neutral shoe.
